Looking after your wig properly makes all the difference to how it looks and how long it lasts. Whether you wear a synthetic wig or a human hair piece, a few simple habits will keep it feeling soft, sitting naturally and looking its best between salon visits.

Here at The Classic Hair Company in Tilbury, I help clients choose their wigs and I also make sure they leave with the confidence to care for them at home. These are the tips I share with every client.

Washing your wig

You do not need to wash your wig as often as you wash your own hair. For a wig you wear every day, washing it every two to three weeks is a good starting point. If you wear it less often, every six to eight weeks will keep it fresh.

Always use cold or lukewarm water. Hot water can damage synthetic fibres and weaken the cap construction on any wig. Use a shampoo made specifically for wigs rather than a regular high street shampoo, as standard products can leave a residue that dulls the fibres over time.

Soak the wig gently for a few minutes, rinse thoroughly, and follow with a wig conditioner. Pat it dry with a towel rather than wringing or rubbing it. Then place it on a wig stand and let it air dry completely before wearing it again.

Brushing and detangling

Always brush your wig when it is dry, not wet. Use a wide tooth comb or a brush designed for wigs, starting from the ends and working upwards toward the cap. A regular bristle brush can stretch or snap the fibres, so it is worth investing in the right tool.

If your wig has developed tangles, a light spritz of leave in conditioner before brushing will help loosen them without pulling.

Storing your wig properly

How you store your wig matters just as much as how you wash it. When you take your wig off for the night, place it on a wig stand or a head shaped form. This keeps the cap in the right shape and stops the hair from creasing or matting.

Avoid leaving your wig in direct sunlight or near heat sources such as radiators and ovens. Heat is the biggest enemy of synthetic wigs in particular, and prolonged sun exposure can fade the colour over time.

When to bring your wig to a professional

Home care keeps your wig in good shape between visits, but there are times when a professional touch makes a real difference. If the style has lost its shape, the fibres are feeling rough, or you want the fit adjusted, our wig personalisation service in Tilbury can refresh the cut, restyle the hair and fine tune the cap so it feels like new again.

If you are unsure whether your wig is synthetic or human hair and want advice on the right products to use, we covered the differences in our guide to synthetic wigs vs human hair wigs.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I wash my wig?

For daily wear, washing every two to three weeks is a good guide. If you wear your wig less frequently, every six to eight weeks will keep it fresh. Washing too often can shorten the lifespan of synthetic fibres, so it is better to spot clean between washes if needed.

Can I use normal shampoo on a wig?

It is better to use a shampoo made for wigs. Regular shampoos contain sulphates and other ingredients that can strip the coating on synthetic fibres and leave a heavy residue. Wig shampoos are gentler and designed to clean without causing damage.

Can I use a hairdryer on my wig?

If you have a human hair wig, you can use a hairdryer on a low heat setting. Synthetic wigs should always be air dried unless the label specifically states the fibres are heat friendly. Using heat on a standard synthetic wig will permanently damage the hair.

How long does a synthetic wig last with proper care?

With regular care, a synthetic wig worn daily typically lasts four to six months. Wigs worn less frequently can last much longer. Good washing habits, proper storage and gentle brushing all help extend its life.

How should I store my wig overnight?

Place your wig on a stand or head shaped form to keep the cap in shape and the hair sitting naturally. Avoid folding it or leaving it loose in a drawer, as this can create creases and tangles that are difficult to brush out.
