How to wash a human hair wig without damaging it

A human hair wig is an investment, and washing it properly helps it last longer, stay soft and continue to look natural. The process is different from washing your own hair, and using the wrong technique or products can cause tangling, dryness or even permanent damage to the fibres.

Here at The Classic Hair Company in Tilbury, Essex, we advise every wig client on how to care for their piece at home. This guide covers the full washing process step by step.

How often should you wash a human hair wig?

If you wear your wig every day, washing it every two to three weeks is a good guide. If you wear it less often, every six to eight weeks will keep it fresh. Overwashing strips the natural oils from human hair wigs faster than necessary, so it is better to wash less frequently and spot clean between washes if needed.

What you will need

Before you start, gather a few things: a wig-specific shampoo and conditioner (not regular high street products), a wide tooth comb, a clean towel, and a wig stand for drying. Regular shampoos contain sulphates and silicones that can build up on the hair and weigh it down over time.

Step by step washing guide

Start by gently detangling the wig with a wide tooth comb, working from the ends upward. This prevents matting during the wash.

Fill a basin with cool or lukewarm water. Hot water can weaken the hair bonds and cause shedding, so keep the temperature low. Add a small amount of wig shampoo to the water and submerge the wig, pressing it gently through the water rather than rubbing or scrubbing.

Let the wig soak for five to ten minutes, then rinse thoroughly under cool running water until all the shampoo is gone. Apply a wig conditioner from the mid-lengths to the ends, avoiding the cap and any knots at the root. Leave the conditioner on for three to five minutes, then rinse again with cool water.

Drying your wig safely

Pat the wig gently with a clean towel to remove excess water. Never wring or twist a human hair wig, as this stretches the hair and can distort the cap.

Place the wig on a stand and let it air dry completely before wearing or styling it. If you need to use a hairdryer, set it to a low heat and keep it moving rather than holding it in one spot.

After washing: styling and storage

Once the wig is dry, you can style it as you normally would. Human hair wigs can be straightened, curled and blow-dried, which is one of the key advantages over synthetic pieces. We explained those differences in our guide to synthetic wigs vs human hair wigs.

Always store your wig on a stand or head-shaped form when you are not wearing it. This keeps the cap shape and prevents tangling.

If your wig needs a restyle or professional deep condition, our wig personalisation service can refresh the cut and bring the hair back to life.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use normal shampoo on a human hair wig?

It is better to use a shampoo made for wigs. Regular shampoos contain sulphates and silicones that can dry out the hair and cause product build-up on the cap. Wig shampoos are formulated to clean gently without stripping natural oils.

How do I stop my human hair wig from tangling after washing?

Always detangle before washing using a wide tooth comb, working from the ends upward. Apply conditioner from the mid-lengths down and avoid rubbing the hair. Once dry, brush gently and store the wig on a stand to prevent matting.

Can I use heat tools on a human hair wig?

Yes. Human hair wigs can be straightened, curled and blow-dried just like natural hair. Use a heat protectant spray and keep temperatures moderate to avoid drying out the fibres over time.

How long does a human hair wig last with proper care?

With regular care, a human hair wig can last one to three years depending on how often it is worn and how well it is maintained. Proper washing, conditioning and storage all extend the lifespan.

Should I wash my wig in hot or cold water?

Always use cool or lukewarm water. Hot water weakens the hair bonds and can cause shedding. Cool water keeps the cuticle smooth and helps the wig stay shiny and soft.
